Course Details

This course focuses on improving students’ overall communicative ability in common language tasks such as making invitations, describing preferences, making suggestions, giving directions, and stating an opinion. Students will work with partners and in groups to write dialogues and summaries, complete interviews and surveys, and analyze written texts and graphs. They will also be introduced to the differences between formal and informal speech.

This course combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice. Students will learn vocabulary related to food and restaurants, idioms, and jobs. They will also practice their pronunciation. Writing assignments include letters, summaries, and descriptive paragraphs. This course also includes a review of present and past tenses including present continuous, present perfect continuous, simple past, and past continuous. Course content is presented in themes related to restaurants, money, and work.

Before taking this course, students should be able to speak and write in loosely connected sentences. They should be comfortable with simple present tense. Students should be able to ask and respond to questions and understand short and predictable texts.

Course Prerequisites

Important Placement Test Information: All new and returning students must take a placement test to participate in the program. The test’s time, date and location are included in a payment confirmation email you will receive after enrolling.
