Course Description

The Certificate in Higher Education Management program seeks to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the higher education industry in a global context.  The program offers insight into the academic, research, financial, and administrative missions of higher education institutions. Substantive topics covered in the program include:

  1. The Higher Education Market and Globalization
  2. Organization and Administration of Higher Education Institutions
  3. The Faculty Role in the Academy
  4. The Student Experience: Understanding the Student Journey
  5. Academic Affairs
  6. Emerging Trends and Advanced Topics in Higher Education

The primary goal of the program is to enable higher education professionals to obtain a holistic perspective of higher education management in order to be competitive in a global market.  By comparing policies, practices and experience between different countries, participants will be prepared to succeed in management roles in the higher education space. 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand major trends in regulations, demographics, employment, technology, and financing affecting the higher education market
  • Conduct a competitive analysis of the higher education market at micro (i.e. individual institutions) and macro  (i.e. national) levels
  • Articulate the changing role of a research-intensive private institution in a global market and its value proposition for various stakeholders (e.g. students, faculty, alumni, communities, etc.)
  • Develop a systems-thinking approach to understanding the challenges, complexities, advantages, and opportunities in operating a global university 
  • Distinguish between management skills required to run a university vs. other types of organizations (e.g. corporations, government agencies, etc.)
  • Gain awareness of best practices in higher education management (e.g. enrollment management)
  • Prepare to lead an academic or business unit for the university
