Course Description

Taught by faculty in the Emergency & Disaster Management Master of Professional Studies Program at Georgetown University, this foundational course equips students with an understanding of the basic legal frameworks and mechanisms that apply to planning for and responding to emergencies and disasters in the United States.  The course will have a special emphasis on disaster preparedness and response exercises and their utility for enhancing emergency & disaster management efficiency. 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the opportunities and constraints of national exercise programs to enhance emergency & disaster management in the U.S.
  • Define the National Exercise Program (NEP) in the U.S.
  • Explain legal frameworks and theories that influence the practice of emergency and disaster management in the U.S.
