Course Description

Taught by faculty in the Emergency & Disaster Management Master of Professional Studies Program at Georgetown University, this foundational course equips students with an understanding of the basic legal frameworks and mechanisms that apply to planning for and responding to emergencies and disasters in the United States. The course will have a special emphasis on disaster preparedness for earthquakes. Participants will make use of real world case studies to explore methods for understanding local conditions, building resilience, and other factors necessary for an effective response and recovery to naturally occurring hazards.

Course Objectives

Program Objectives: Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

• Explain legal frameworks and theories that influence the practice of Emergency & Disaster Management in the U.S.

• Interpret how naturally occurring hazards interact with social, political, environmental, and economic systems

• Identify effective adaptation and resilience strategies for events such as earthquakes that occur without notice

• Consider challenges and future trends in Emergency & Disaster Management
