Course Description

The goal of Career Skills is to prepare EHLS scholars for working in the federal government by providing a 2.5 hour weekly workshop that focuses on skills required to secure federal employment and to succeed in the federal work environment. The course will improve scholars’ ability to find a job in the US government as required by their contract with NSEP.  Scholars develop a professional portfolio and identify appropriate positions within federal agencies. Activities include using online tools for the job search, evaluating positions, researching agencies, preparing targeted documents, and honing interview skills.

The companion Introduction to Federal Government course is a weekly speaker series in which representatives from federal agencies and government contractors introduce scholars to their organizations and identify relevant employment opportunities.

The Career Counseling component of Career Skills consists of one thirty-minute session per week with Roberta Diamond, Career Counselor. Scholars receive individual assistance in drafting and editing job application materials, identifying career goals, targeting appropriate agencies and positions, and completing application materials.  The counselor will also monitor progress and troubleshoot as necessary.
