XCOA-910 - Applying the Theory of Polarities
Course Description
In this interactive foundational session, participants learn fundamental distinctions between problems, paradox, and polarities and how to see the predictable pattern that is present in the polarities. Participants learn to help individuals and systems successfully leverage the ongoing tension in paradoxical situations by mapping polarities using the Polarity Navigator and various other sensemaking tools. Instructors teach the philosophy and methodology of polarity theory and how to practically apply the research that suggests leaders, teams, and organizations that effectively navigate polarities outperform those who don’t.
A crucial component of this course focuses on deepening awareness and understanding of the key polarities at play in oneself as a leader, coach, or practitioner. Through self-assessments, activities, and reflection, individuals begin to examine the ways in which they navigate polarities in order to more effectively help others do the same.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the history, research, and frameworks of polarities and paradox
- Identify and “see polarities” – the most difficult skill of mastery
- Use practical techniques to help others navigate polarities
- Leverage the polarities at play in oneself in order to better lead, coach, or consult
Notes
This course is followed by a 90-minute virtual Polarity Learning Team meeting with a Faculty Advisor.
Polarity learning teams serve as a vehicle to practice seeing polarities, deepening use of self as an instrument for change, and supporting the understanding of polarities and application of concepts and tools presented throughout the program. Each team works to support the personal application and practices of concepts presented in the program.
