XCPD-897 - Wearing the CFO Hat: Corporate Financial Strategy
Course Description
Financial acumen is a core competency of successful managers in any organization. Moreover, managers will make better decisions – and be more successful financially in their careers – when they can "wear the CFO hat". By this we mean understanding the many roles and responsibilities of financial managers, and using this to develop an effective relationship with them to gain their support for financial decisions.
Students who complete this course will have a strong foundation in financial management and insight into many of the core responsibilities of a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the members of their organization. Students will increase their confidence in strategic financial management, especially the ability to tie fiscal strategy to operational goals, and acquire the knowledge to apply financial principles to business scenarios, decisions, and situations. Key areas covered by the course include:
- Responsibilities of CFOs and corporate financial officers
- Overview of financial statements and decision making techniques
- Internal controls and risk management
- Raising funds
- Investor relations
Students will also discuss a variety of corporate financial management topics and assessments to strengthen their skills and understanding of what it is like to "wear the CFO hat".
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Understand strategic financial management
- Identify financial management principles and concepts required for a business case
- Apply appropriate financial management principles to financial strategy
- Identify tools to effectively collaborate with key financial stakeholders and audiences

Academic coursework in fundamental business management and financial strategy is required. Participants with limited skills or experience are encouraged to register and complete Business Administration and/or Budget and Finance courses prior to enrolling in this course.
