Course Description

This nine-week course focuses on preparing students for the TOEFL exam. Students taking this course will improve their skills in key areas of the TOEFL so that they feel more prepared for the demands of this exam. In this course, students will practice giving descriptions, stating preferences, giving an opinion, improving reading comprehension, taking notes, summarizing main ideas, outlining paragraphs, and writing opinionated texts. They will identify the main ideas in a short lecture and academic conversation and will write an opinionated paragraph.

Students will have an opportunity to study all four sections of the exam: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They will work with partners and in groups to practice forming responses to questions that are similar to those they will find on the TOEFL exam and will get feedback from their classmates and instructor. This course starts and ends with a practice exam in order for students to see their improvement over the duration of the course.

Before taking this course, students should be able to speak in paragraph-length discourse in informal and some formal conversations. They should be able to write basic academic paragraphs including descriptions. In addition, students should be able to understand clearly structured texts.

IMPORTANT: Students should purchase a NEW copy of the textbook before class begins as it will be used for course assignments. 

Application Instructions

I. Mandatory Placement Test Requirement:

All new and returning students are required to take a placement exam before classes begin to determine their correct placement into the course secure placement testing. 

The Evening & Weekend English program reserves the right to move students to a different level of a course if placement test results or the diagnostic test given on the first day of class warrants it. All such moves will be completed in the first week of classes with no additional charge to the student.

If your placement test results indicate that you do not meet the minimum English proficiency level required for admission to the Evening & Weekend English program, you will receive a 100% refund of your course tuition payment minus a nonrefundable $50 administrative fee per course enrolled.

II. Refund and Withdrawals:

There are no tuition refunds for drops/withdrawals requested four (4) or fewer calendar days before the published start date of the course section or after the course section has started. • 14 calendar days or more before the published start date of the course section: 100% tuition refund less $50 admin fee

• Between 14 and five (5) days before the published start date of the course section: 75% tuition refund less $50 admin fee

• Four (4) or fewer calendar days before the published start date of the course section or after the course section has started: $0

Refunds will be credited back to the credit card used to make the payment 30 days after the drop has been processed.
