Course Description

Higher education institutions are grappling with unprecedented challenges and need faculty who can leverage their professional and academic expertise to drive improvements in student engagement, retention, and success. The Georgetown Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education will equip novice and experienced faculty and learning professionals with the essential knowledge, skills, and tools to create a positive learning environment and increase student engagement.


Blending theory and practice, this program covers the critical issues in teaching and learning, from designing effective learning experiences to assessing student learning, engaging and communicating with students, navigating student behavior challenges, fostering an inclusive learning climate, and addressing ethical and compliance issues.

Participants will craft a teaching philosophy, conduct a classroom observation, and develop a plan to continuously improve their teaching practice. Through expert-led instruction, self-reflection, peer discussions, case studies, and simulated practice, you will gain the necessary skills to excel as an educator and make learning meaningful for students.


 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the certificate, you will be able to: 

  1. Apply learning theories and frameworks to curriculum design, teaching practice and student assessment activities. 
  2. Select appropriate strategies and methods to enhance student engagement, navigate classroom challenges, and foster an inclusive learning environment.  
  3. Conduct and analyze assessments to improve student learning, teacher practice and course design.  
  4. Integrate ethics, compliance and the institutional mission into teaching and  learning activities to ensure alignment with core values and standards.
  5. Develop a personalized strategy to facilitate student-centered learning and advance your teaching practice.
