Course Description

This course focuses on improving students’ overall communicative ability in both informal and formal language tasks such as apologizing, making recommendations, giving a warning, participating in group conversations, and speaking on the telephone. Students will also work on academic skills such as giving presentations, reading academic texts, and writing persuasive paragraphs. There will be special attention on adjusting speech depending on the scenario and relationships.

This course combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice. Students will learn vocabulary related to gossip, shopping, customer service, and the environment. Writing assignments include summaries, reviews, posters, and formal opinionated paragraphs. Course content is presented in themes related to entertainment, customer service, and the environment.

Before taking this course, students are expected to be able to speak and write in connected sentences in present, past, and future tense. They should be able to speak comfortably in everyday social situations and be able to write paragraph-length texts about familiar topics. Students should be able to understand familiar spoken and written texts with a good amount of accuracy.

Course Prerequisites

Course Technology Requirement:

All Georgetown University classes will use remote delivery platforms until further notice. This includes the summer and fall Evening and Weekend English program courses. Classes will be held in a virtual setting using the Zoom platform and the university learning management system, Canvas. This means you will have the opportunity to engage with instructors and students online during normal class hours.

To participate in the courses, students are required to have access to a high-speed internet connection, a webcam, and audio capability. (A desktop or laptop computer is recommended). The classes will be held in a synchronous (real-time) manner; you will be required to participate online during scheduled class hours.

Course Policies:

I. Mandatory Placement Test Requirement:

All new and returning students are required to take a placement exam before classes begin to determine their correct placement into the course section. After completing registration, you will receive a payment confirmation email including your placement test appointment. If you are unable to attend at the appointed time, you must contact Program Coordinator Regan Carver at 202-687-4592 or guELC@georgetown.edu immediately to make alternative arrangements.

Please note that your enrollment will not be complete until you take your placement test. All placement tests will be administered remotely using an online test. Students will be required to have access to a computer with a high-speed internet connection, as well as audio and video capabilities. Program staff will work with you to communicate additional technology requirements. Within one week after the placement test, you will receive an email with your final course placement.

The Evening & Weekend English program reserves the right to move students to a different level of a course if placement test results or first class diagnostic testing warrants it. All such moves will be completed in the first week of classes with no additional charge to the student.

If your placement test results indicate that you do not meet the minimum English proficiency level required for admission to the Evening & Weekend English program, you will receive a 100% refund of your course tuition payment minus a nonrefundable $50 administrative fee per course enrolled.
