Course Description

Mentor Coaching is an important requirement of the ICF Credentialing process and is vital to the development and growth of the individual seeking an ICF Credential. ICF has actively promoted Mentor Coaching and has evidence that Mentor Coaching improves the quality of coaching by credential applicants. It has added Mentor Coaching to the requirements for credentials.

According to the ICF, Mentor Coaching means: “a credential applicant being coached on their coaching skills rather than coaching on practice building, life balance, or other topics unrelated to the development of an applicant’s coaching skill.”

Mentor Coaching provides the opportunity to share coaching skills with someone who can provide feedback regarding use of the ICF Core Competencies. Mentor Coaching should take place over an extended time in a cycle that allows for listening and feedback from the Mentor Coach, and reflection and practice on the part of the individual being mentored.

ICF has developed a Mentor Coach Registry to assist coaches in finding mentor coaches. Those listed in this registry have agreed to follow the ICF definition of Mentor Coaching, Best Practices for Mentor Coaches, and in many cases have completed advanced training that has prepared them to provide high quality services to those that they are mentoring. It is anticipated that advanced training will be required in the future.

There are currently several Mentor Coach training programs available to coaches. With more than 26,000 current ICF members and over 13,000 credential holders, Mentor Coaching is a strong area of professional practice for credentialed coaches. Georgetown University has a history of excellence in educating leadership coaches. We want to be on the cutting edge in Mentor Coach education and training in line with current and anticipated ICF requirements. There are no known Mentor Coach training programs associated with University Coach Training Programs.

Here are the current requirements for Mentor Coaching:

• For ACC renewals only, an additional 10 hours of Mentor Coaching above those hours required for initial credential.

• For PCC portfolio applicants - 10 hours of work with a qualified Mentor Coach over a minimum of 3 months.

• For MCC applicants - must be coached for a minimum of 10 hours over a minimum of 3 months by a qualified Mentor Coach (unless they are graduates of an ACTP).

Demand might be predicted by these statistics comparing the period January to May 2013 to January to May 2014:

• There is a 160.7% increase in ACC portfolio applicants

• There is a 191.9% increase in PCC portfolio applicants

• There is an astounding 784.6% increase in MCC applicants (some of these may be graduates of ACTP schools and may not need additional mentor coaching)
