Course Description

This course is designed to give the paralegal a working knowledge of Spanish as it is used in the professional law office and the courtroom. The course will be taught mostly in English, but at least a beginner’s level of knowledge of Spanish is preferred. We will cover the following topics: overview of the court system and basic legal vocabulary, the client and witness interviews, criminal law, immigration law, personal injury law, employment law, family law, real estate and probate law, bankruptcy, basic medical vocabulary, and the vocabulary of courtroom litigation. By the end of the course, students will be able to conduct basic legal affairs in Spanish with Hispanic clients and other professionals, and will be familiar with the everyday vocabulary of the law office and courtroom. In addition, each class will feature a Spanish comprehension component and a pronunciation exercise using current periodicals and news items.
