Course Description

This course introduces the various fixed income products that exist in the market today and how they are traded in both the primary and secondary markets. Students will discuss the determinants of the yield curve, how and why interest rates change, and other risks that exist in the market as it relates to individual securities. Special emphasis is placed on the role of Government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) in the market using case studies and real-world examples.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, a successful student will be able to:

  • Recognize the characteristics of fixed income securities, including US Treasury securities, corporate bonds, callable bonds, municipal bonds, and mortgage backed securities (MBS)
  • Explain how securities are traded in both the primary and secondary market
  • Identify the various risks associated with fixed income securities
  • Describe the mechanics of the yield curve and the relationship of bond prices to yields
  • Evaluate the role of GSEs in the market
