Book Creator Academy | Course Description

Have you ever dreamed of writing and publishing a book while still in high school?

This summer,  embark on a one-of-a-kind experience to become a published author through Georgetown University Professor Eric Koester's Book Creator Academy. More than 200 students have gone through this award-winning author program to create and publish their first book. Ideal for ambitious students who enjoy writing, this academy includes three weeks of on-campus learning combined with 10 months of virtual learning and coaching sessions. You’ll be paired with a professional developmental editor, who will help you learn key components of storytelling, narratives, research, interviewing, and manuscript and chapter structuring.

Before you begin the Book Creator Academy, you'll work one-on-one with Professor Koester to identify and develop a book topic based on your interests and goals. You'll then begin researching, interviewing, and developing the concept. During the on-campus component, you'll begin writing and learning the key techniques of storytelling, linking ideas, dialogue, and more. During the remainder of the program, you’ll have weekly author sessions and teaching. Most authors spend three to five hours per week (including these sessions) engaged in writing, research, and book-related work and activities.

Upon successful completion of your first draft manuscript in October 2020, you'll then work with our partner publisher to begin the production and marketing of your work, ultimately publishing your book in April 2021. Through this innovative model, student authors retain 100 percent of the control, rights, and royalties of their work.

*Please note: this academy is currently only open to commuter students. Please see our commuter policy for eligibility information.
