Course Description

In the Innovative Leadership in Public Administration Certificate Program, participants will develop foundational skills in critical functions necessary for success in public administration – budget management, innovative approaches to sustainability and economic development, and data-informed decision-making – while also building competencies in leadership. The program combines interactive classroom instruction with personal one-on-one leadership coaching, which allows participants substantive opportunities for self-assessment, reflection, and feedback. In addition, the theoretical frameworks and knowledge gained in the classroom will be complemented with practical small-group projects and opportunities to share real-world experiences with thought leaders from local, state, and federal government.  

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants should be able to:  

  • Exercise deeper self-awareness and understanding of choices available as a leader;

  • Employ mindful leadership to navigate complexity, emotions, and stress;

  • Gain familiarity with budgets, spending related policies, and data sources for financial information;

  • Apply innovation tools and insights from the private sector in the public sector to issues such as sustainability and economic development;

  • Seek, organize, and analyze pertinent information in order to make better-informed decisions; and

  • Set and achieve goals to be more effective public administration leaders.
