Course Description

This innovative program is designed to prepare leaders to meet the existential crisis of our time. At the intersection of leadership and sustainability, participants will gain a strong working knowledge of the global sustainability movement and develop the skills and mindset to advocate for and lead change. This program explores sustainability from multiple levels of system including individual, social, community & organizational, and global. At the culmination of the program, participants will apply their knowledge and skills in a real-life practicum sustainability project.

Course Outline

Module 1: What is Sustainability?

This foundational module focuses on key concepts in sustainability and the historical context that has brought us to this moment. We will also begin the process of developing the learning community addressing both individual and group needs.

Module 2: You and Sustainability

During Module 2, participants will explore the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) and their role in our ability to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the individual level, we will use our personal values as a lens from which we will explore the IDGs.

Module 3: Connecting the IDGs and SDGs

In Module 3, we examine the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the social level integrating concepts in sustainability and equity.

Module 4: Shifting the Paradigm

In Module 4, we will hear from a panel of experts who are working towards one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and develop a framework for making an impact at the local level.

Module 5: Creating Global Impact

In Module 5, we shift our focus globally and explore how each of us can create opportunities that have a global impact.

Module 6: Promises and Accountability

Module 6 is an integration of concepts presented throughout the program. Participants will create an individual sustainability intention and develop a comprehensive sustainability plan to be applied within their community and beyond.

Capstone

Participants will gather virtually about a month and a half after the final module for a final presentation to review the impact of the individual sustainability projects.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe key aspects of the global sustainability movement
• Advocate for sustainability within their sphere of influence and beyond
• Integrate personal story into their sustainability action plan
• Identify steps to create change at multiple levels of system
• Take integrated action to impact sustainable change
