Course Description

This innovative program is designed to train medical students in foundational coaching skills for partnering with clients to move towards achieving health & wellness outcomes. Students will learn about active listening, behavior change principles, motivational interviewing, outcome orientation and goal setting to support clients in feeling trust, connection and progression in their health journey. The program is taught by Georgetown’s Health & Wellness Coaching program faculty, who are dual-certified health & wellness coaches from the National Board of Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) and the International Coach Federation (ICF).

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Listen actively focusing on what the client is and is not saying in the context of supporting the client to fully express themselves
  • Create a trusting and safe partnership between client, case worker, and wellness partner that maintains a relationship of mutual respect and trust
  • Use motivational interviewing to support clients in creating their own vision and motivations of healthier outcomes
  • Maintain focus with the client using an outcome-oriented mindset
  • Understand how to empower clients to create SMART goals towards creating more sustainable changes over time
  • Empower clients to celebrate every stage of growth and success
