Course Description

The "Principles of Finance" course is designed to introduce professional learners to the world of finance and basic financial tools for decision-making. This course focuses on the fundamentals of financial management and on the important risk and return relationship. Particular emphasis is placed on Time Value of Money (TVM), including Future and Present Values concepts; interest rates as indicators of the price of money in the market; and basic risk measurement tools – Standard Deviation and Beta. Students will gain an understanding of types of businesses, financial statements, the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) methodology (using TVM), types of financing, and the Net Present Value method for projects analysis. No prior knowledge of finance or statistics is required, making it accessible to all professionals looking to strengthen their financial acumen.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the role and importance of corporate finance within an organization.

2. Compute Future and Present Values, including FV and PV of annuities.

3. Compute Discounted Cash Flow (using Time Value of Money).

4. Understand the basics of risk and return relationship.

5. Apply the concepts of time value of money to financial decision-making.

6. Value bonds and stocks using established financial models.

7. Assess risk and return and understand their relationship.

8. Making good decision using NPV and IRR techniques.

9. Calculate the cost of capital and understand its implications for business decisions
