Course Description

Would you like to be able to “meet your clients where they are” with insight about the practices and approaches that will be most helpful to them?

The theory of stage development has been a missing link in most coach training programs throughout the world. Georgetown was the first to bring it in to the foundational program. The theory is rich, deep, and challenging, and no coach can get everything he/she needs to know about the theory in a foundational course. This course we are proposing will help coaches develop greater discernment and skill in applying this valuable theory to their work, through tailoring tools that are stage-appropriate.

Course Outline

Through cases studies, dialogue, small group activities, and “lecturette,” participants will discover the subtle nuances that make a coaching tool more or less relevant at different stages. The tools will cover a wide range of entry points with a leader including the emotional domain, reflection, speech acts, and specific leader behaviors. Coaches will leave with a template to create their own customized toolkit for working with leaders at these two conventional stages of development, and clear guidelines for how they can expand that toolkit over time, as they encounter new tools and new leader needs.

Course Objectives

At the end of this program, you will have customized several tools specifically applicable to coaching Expert and Achiever leaders – the majority of leaders in the workplace. In addition, you will have a methodology for adapting your current coaching tools to the leader’s stage of development. This will enable you to pragmatically apply the theory of Adult Development in ways that speak to the leaders and the situations the leaders find themselves in.

Coaches who attend this workshop will:

  • Build a set of tools applicable to leaders at the Expert and Achiever developmental stages
  • Think through and modify current “favorite” tools to better reach leaders at the Expert and Achiever developmental stages
  • Identify which tools might be inappropriate for leaders at the Expert and Achiever stages
