Course Description

The environments in which we lead require ever more of us. We operate in environments where much is unknown and/or unforeseen, making it important that leaders are able to both stand in the middle of the complexity and to lead from a strong and deliberate stance. ITL’s Leader Lab helps leaders build skill and practice at both getting ‘still’ and moving in deliberate ways. The four-day program will provide a forum for leaders to work on their real leadership challenges with a group of peers and to apply real-time leadership development distinctions.

The program is divided into two sections. During the first session (2 days) of the program, participants will learn approaches to Mindfulness and a Reflective-Action Process to solving challenges. Participants will also each work a unique leadership challenge they bring to the program. Over the six weeks before participants return to class, participants will take some action on their issue and bring learnings to the second session. During the second session (2 days), the instructors will teach core leadership content anchored to the issues raised during the program. Participants will also continue to work their real issues using the Reflective-Action Process and Mindfulness approaches.

The program is unique in that it works with real leadership challenges and anchors the learning content around the challenges presented rather than predetermining the content. The faculty sees this as a method to literally “pull up a chair” with the group and explore the issues and complexities participants are experiencing in their organization.

This program has at its core three key design components:

  • Teaching Mindfulness approaches to participants and drawing the linkage to leadership capacity and effectiveness;
  • Teaching Reflective-Action Process to participants that will be used to solve real challenges during the class and be a core post-class application in participant’s organizations; and,
  • Using a ‘case-in-point’ teachable moments teaching structure to teach leadership content related to key issues that emerge during the class.

This program provides a balance of helping the leader focus on both doing and being in a supportive community. Methodologies and practices around solving complex problems are introduced and leadership competencies are enhanced by deepening awareness through mindfulness, exercises and reflection.
